Sydney PC User Group Newsletter 4 - 9 July 2016

Meetings for this week:

Friday 8th July

Friday Forum: 9:30 - 12:00
With the "free upgrade" to Windows 10 due to end on 29th July, we will discuss some of the concerns members may still have in taking up this offer.

While some members have already upgraded and are pleased with the new system, others are worried that it may be too challenging or that their favourite programs will not work. With the experience of our Win 10 pioneers, hopefully we will address these concerns and also provide answers to other members' Windows questions.

There will be time for Q & A and general discussion as well.

Communications: 1:00 - 3:00

With many thousands of hours of interesting recorded interviews in their audio collection that are currently not searchable or accessible to the public, the State Library of New South Wales is turning to the popular crowd sourcing for help.

To make these sound archives searchable for everyone and accessible for people with hearing impairment, these audio files are now also being made available in print form using special machine transcription software. However, machine transcriptions sometimes introduce errors with place names, times, foreign accents and background noise, etc. Correcting these errors is where the library needs help.

At this meeting, we will have a sneak preview of this world-class library initiative which is to be launched in late 2016. It should appeal to members who might enjoy listening to a good yarn, solving word puzzles and helping the library at the same time.

There will be time for general discussion plus Q & A as well.
